A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.2.50 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Memory leak in the unshare_userns function in kernel/user_namespace.c in the Linux kernel before 3.10.6 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via an invalid CLONE_NEWUSER unshare call.
The weakness was shared 08/05/2013 by spender as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4205 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70194 (Ubuntu 13.04 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1974-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195922 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-raring Vulnerabilities (USN-1971-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
