Linux Kernel up to 4.10.7 vmwgfx_surface.c vmw_gb_surface_define_ioctl IOCTL Call input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.10.7 (Operating System). This issue affects the function vmw_gb_surface_define_ioctl of the file drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx_surface.c. The manipulation as part of a IOCTL Call leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The vmw_gb_surface_define_ioctl function in drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx_surface.c in the Linux kernel through 4.10.7 does not validate certain levels data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted ioctl call for a /dev/dri/renderD* device.

The bug was discovered 04/03/2017. The weakness was shared 03/30/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7346 since 03/30/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication.
