The bad_mode function in arch/arm64/kernel/traps.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9.5 on the ARM64 platform allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via vectors involving an attempted register access that triggers an unexpected value in the Exception Syndrome Register (ESR).
The weakness was presented 05/31/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4220 since 06/12/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
