A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-3189.
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/13/2013 by Scott Bell with Security-Assessment.com as MS13-059 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-3188 since 04/17/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1987 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69324 (MS13-059: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2862772)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100160 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-059)).
Applying the patch MS13-059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13098.
