ARM Trusted Firmware 1.2/1.3 Update SMC integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in ARM Trusted Firmware 1.2/1.3. It has been rated as critical. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component Update SMC. This manipulation as part of Update causes integer overflow. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2016-10319. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ARM Trusted Firmware 1.2/1.3 (Firmware Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Update SMC. The manipulation as part of a Update leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In ARM Trusted Firmware 1.2 and 1.3, a malformed firmware update SMC can result in copying unexpectedly large data into secure memory because of integer overflows. This affects certain cases involving execution of both AArch64 Generic Trusted Firmware (TF) BL1 code and other firmware update code.

The bug was discovered 09/02/2016. The weakness was disclosed 04/06/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10319 since 04/06/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 216 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
