Details
A vulnerability was found in Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro 8.1 (4303.670.1908). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file acs.exe of the component Named Pipe Handler. The manipulation of the argument common_handler with the input value ../../ leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 08/02/2013 by Ahmad Moghimi as A journey to antivirus escalation as not defined blog post (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mallocat.com. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. The advisory points out:
The software uses a main service acs.exe. acs.exe is Agnitum client service and run as system user. All of the functionality of the internet security suite pass through this service and the service use various components. (…) Agnitum client service (acs.exe) register a named pipe and allow communication through this named pipe. It is possible get a handle to this named pipe through " \.pipeacsipc_server" path. Sub_ 4F7580 at acs.exe module is responsible for reading data from the mentioned named pipe.
A public exploit has been developed by Ahmad Moghimi and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at mallocat.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (27282), OSVDB (96208†) and Secunia (SA54477†). The entry VDB-9953 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
