Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Digium Asterisk (Communications System) (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the component CDR Dialplan Function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Remote code execution can occur in Asterisk Open Source 13.x before 13.14.1 and 14.x before 14.3.1 and Certified Asterisk 13.13 before 13.13-cert3 because of a buffer overflow in a CDR user field, related to X-ClientCode in chan_sip, the CDR dialplan function, and the AMI Monitor action.

The bug was discovered 03/27/2017. The weakness was presented 04/10/2017 by Alex (Website). The advisory is available at downloads.asterisk.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-7617 since 04/10/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99363 (Asterisk 13.13 < 13.13-cert3 / 13.x < 13.14.1 / 14.x < 14.3.1 CDR user Field RCE (AST-2017-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371283 (Asterisk's Buffer Overflow in CDR's Set User Vulnerability (AST-2017-001)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99363) and SecurityFocus (BID 97377†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
