A vulnerability was found in setroubleshoot up to 3.2.22. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function commands.getstatusoutput of the component allow_execmod. The manipulation as part of a Binary File Name leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The allow_execmod plugin for setroubleshoot before 3.2.23 allows local users to execute arbitrary commands by triggering an execmod SELinux denial with a crafted binary filename, related to the commands.getstatusoutput function.
The bug was discovered 06/22/2016. The weakness was disclosed 04/11/2017 with Red Hat as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4444 since 05/02/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91732 (CentOS 6 : setroubleshoot / setroubleshoot-plugins (CESA-2016:1267)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157212 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for setroubleshoot and setroubleshoot-plugins (ELSA-2016-1267)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.23 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
