Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in McAfee Network Data Loss Prevention 8.6/9.2.0/9.2.1/9.2.2 (Data Loss Prevention Software). This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a entropy vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-331. The product uses an algorithm or scheme that produces insufficient entropy, leaving patterns or clusters of values that are more likely to occur than others. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
TCP, when using a large Window Size, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP.
The weakness was published 08/13/2013 by Paul as SB10053 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at kc.mcafee.com. The public release has been coordinated with McAfee. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0230 since 03/17/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600.001 for this issue.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18023 (MS05-019: Vulnerabilities in TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (893066)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82054 (TCP Sequence Number Approximation Based Denial of Service).
Upgrading to version 9.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mcafee.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
This release resolves the 17 issues (…)Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2523.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15886), Tenable (18023), SecurityFocus (BID 10183†), OSVDB (96287†) and Secunia (SA54484†). Similar entries are available at VDB-1361, VDB-2599, VDB-2600 and VDB-9959. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
