Trend Micro Threat Discovery Appliance 2.6.1062r1 session_id path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Trend Micro Threat Discovery Appliance 2.6.1062r1. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation of the argument session_id with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

On the Trend Micro Threat Discovery Appliance 2.6.1062r1, directory traversal when processing a session_id cookie allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to delete arbitrary files as root. This can be used to bypass authentication or cause a DoS.

The bug was discovered 09/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2017 by Roberto Suggi Liverani (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-7552 since 09/09/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation.
