The bug was discovered 06/18/2015. The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2017 by Giancarlo Canales as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-4646 since 06/18/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84841 (Fedora 22 : squashfs-tools-4.3-11.fc22 (2015-10750)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124019 (Fedora Security Update for squashfs-tools (FEDORA-2015-10760)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
