The weakness was disclosed 01/28/2013 by Michael van Elst as NetBSD Security Advisory 2013-001 as confirmed advisory (FTP Server). The advisory is shared at ftp.netbsd.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 6.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
For all affected NetBSD versions, you need to obtain fixed kernel sources, rebuild and install the new kernel, and reboot the system.
