CVE-2022-20784 in Web Security Applianceinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 04/06/2022

A vulnerability in the Web-Based Reputation Score (WBRS) engine of Cisco AsyncOS Software for Cisco Web Security Appliance (WSA) could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass established web request policies and access blocked content on an affected device. This vulnerability is due to incorrect handling of certain character combinations inserted into a URL. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted URLs to be processed by an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to bypass the web proxy and access web content that has been blocked by policy.

Analysis

by VulDB Data Team • 04/08/2022

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2022-20784 resides within the Web-Based Reputation Score engine of Cisco AsyncOS Software operating on Cisco Web Security Appliances, representing a critical security flaw that undermines the fundamental purpose of web content filtering and access control. This weakness specifically targets the URL parsing mechanism where certain character combinations are not properly handled during the web request processing pipeline, creating an exploitable condition that allows unauthorized access to blocked content. The vulnerability operates at the application layer and affects the core functionality of the web security appliance, which is designed to enforce corporate web policies and prevent access to malicious or inappropriate websites. The flaw demonstrates a classic case of improper input validation where the system fails to adequately sanitize or process specific URL character sequences that should trigger policy enforcement mechanisms.

The technical exploitation of this vulnerability occurs through the manipulation of URL character combinations that are processed by the Web-Based Reputation Score engine, which is responsible for evaluating web requests against established security policies. When an attacker crafts a URL containing specific character sequences that are not properly handled by the parsing logic, the system fails to correctly interpret the request and instead allows the content to bypass the configured access controls. This improper handling of character combinations can involve various encoding schemes, special characters, or sequence arrangements that the engine does not properly account for during the reputation scoring process. The vulnerability essentially creates a path traversal or injection-like condition where the URL processing logic is circumvented, allowing malicious requests to proceed without proper policy enforcement. This behavior aligns with CWE-20, which describes improper input validation, and demonstrates how character encoding issues can lead to security bypasses in web filtering systems.

The operational impact of this vulnerability extends beyond simple access control bypass, as it fundamentally compromises the security posture of organizations relying on Cisco Web Security Appliances for network protection. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this weakness without requiring any credentials or privileged access, making it particularly dangerous in enterprise environments where web filtering policies are critical for maintaining security standards. The ability to access blocked content through this vulnerability could lead to exposure to malicious websites, data exfiltration opportunities, and potential lateral movement within the network. Organizations may experience unauthorized access to restricted resources, violation of compliance requirements, and increased risk of malware infections. The vulnerability affects the integrity of the web security policy enforcement mechanism, potentially allowing attackers to access sensitive corporate information, bypass content filtering for social media, streaming services, or other restricted categories. This type of attack falls under the ATT&CK technique T1071.004 for application layer protocol and T1566 for credential harvesting, as it enables bypass of security controls that would normally prevent such access.

Mitigation strategies for CVE-2022-20784 should focus on immediate patch deployment from Cisco, which provides the necessary code fixes to properly handle the character combinations that trigger the vulnerability. Organizations should also implement network segmentation and additional monitoring controls to detect anomalous web traffic patterns that may indicate exploitation attempts. The security team should conduct thorough reviews of existing web filtering policies and ensure that all character encoding scenarios are properly accounted for in the system configuration. Additional defensive measures include implementing web application firewalls, enhancing logging and monitoring capabilities for URL processing events, and conducting regular security assessments of the web security infrastructure. The vulnerability highlights the importance of robust input validation and proper character handling in security-critical systems, emphasizing that even seemingly minor parsing issues can create significant security risks. Organizations should also consider implementing multi-layered security approaches that do not rely solely on a single point of failure for content filtering, ensuring that the compromise of one security control does not lead to complete policy bypass.
