Analysis

by VulDB Data Team • 09/30/2026

The SourceCodester Online Leave Management System version 1.0 contains a critical security flaw within its administrative reporting module, specifically affecting the endpoint /admin/?page=reports. This vulnerability manifests as an SQL injection weakness resulting from improper validation and sanitization of user-supplied input parameters. The system fails to adequately process or escape data provided through the date_start and date_end arguments before incorporating them into backend database queries. Because these parameters are directly used in constructing SQL statements without sufficient safeguards, attackers can inject malicious SQL code that alters the intended logic of the query. This type of flaw is a classic example of CWE-89 Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command commonly known as SQL Injection allowing unauthorized access to or manipulation of data stored in the database.

The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe due to its remote exploitability and the nature of the affected component. Since the reporting module handles administrative functions, successful exploitation could allow a remote attacker to bypass authentication mechanisms if they are tied to query logic, extract sensitive information such as user credentials personal identifiable data or financial records from the leave management database modify existing records by injecting update statements or even execute commands on the underlying operating system depending on the database configuration and privileges. The fact that public exploits exist significantly lowers the barrier for entry enabling less skilled threat actors to compromise the integrity confidentiality and availability of the affected systems. This aligns with ATT&CK technique T1059 Command Line Interface which may be leveraged through stacked queries or out-of-band data exfiltration methods facilitated by SQL injection payloads.

Mitigation strategies must focus on immediate remediation of the input validation logic within the application code. Developers should implement parameterized queries prepared statements to ensure that user inputs are treated strictly as data rather than executable code regardless of their content. Additionally applying strict type checking and range validation for date fields can prevent malformed or malicious payloads from reaching the database layer further reducing attack surface. It is also advisable to deploy a Web Application Firewall configured with rulesets capable of detecting and blocking common SQL injection patterns providing an additional layer of defense while patches are being applied. Regular security audits and static code analysis should be integrated into the development lifecycle to identify similar vulnerabilities in other modules before they can be exploited by adversaries seeking to compromise organizational data assets.
