CVE-2026-14435 in Turbonomic kubeturbo agentinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 11/08/2026

IBM Turbonomic kubeturbo agent 8.16.0 through 8.20.3 does not validate or improperly validates TLS certificate validation, which could allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information using man in the middle techniques.

The vulnerability identified in IBM Turbonomic kubeturbo agents versions 8.16.0 through 8.20.3 represents a critical failure in transport layer security implementation within container orchestration environments. The core technical flaw lies in the improper validation of Transport Layer Security certificates during communication between the agent and its management components or external services. In standard secure communications, TLS certificate validation ensures that the client is connecting to the intended server by verifying the server's digital signature against a trusted Certificate Authority chain. However, in these affected versions of kubeturbo, this verification process is either bypassed entirely or executed with insufficient checks for hostname matching and expiration status. This deficiency allows an attacker positioned within the network path to intercept traffic without triggering security alerts that would normally occur during a successful certificate validation failure.

From an operational perspective, this misconfiguration creates a significant attack surface for Man-in-the-Middle attacks. An adversary who gains access to the same network segment as the kubeturbo agent can perform passive eavesdropping or active session hijacking by presenting a fraudulent TLS certificate that is accepted by the vulnerable client software. Since the agent does not rigorously validate the identity of the server it communicates with, any intercepted data transmitted between the Kubernetes cluster and Turbonomic management systems remains exposed. This exposure encompasses sensitive operational metrics, configuration details, and potentially authentication tokens or credentials used for managing resource allocation within the container environment. The lack of strict certificate pinning or validation means that even self-signed certificates or expired certificates are accepted as valid connections, fundamentally undermining the confidentiality guarantees provided by TLS encryption.

This vulnerability aligns with CWE-295 Improper Certificate Validation and CWE-319 Cleartext Transmission of Sensitive Information within the Common Weakness Enumeration framework. It also maps to MITRE ATT&CK technique T1078 Valid Accounts if used in conjunction with credential theft, or more directly to network interception techniques where an attacker exploits trust relationships to bypass security controls. The impact extends beyond simple data leakage; it compromises the integrity of resource management decisions made by Turbonomic based on potentially tampered telemetry data. If an attacker can inject false metrics into the communication stream while maintaining a valid TLS session, they could manipulate workload placement and scaling policies, leading to denial-of-service conditions or performance degradation across the Kubernetes cluster.

Mitigation strategies must prioritize immediate patching of all kubeturbo agents to version 8.20.4 or later where this validation logic has been corrected. In environments where upgrading is not immediately feasible, network segmentation should be implemented to restrict communication between kubeturbo agents and management servers to trusted subnets only. Additionally, deploying intrusion detection systems capable of analyzing TLS handshake anomalies may help identify attempts to exploit this flaw by detecting connections using unexpected or untrusted certificates. Long-term remediation involves enforcing strict certificate validation policies across all infrastructure components and implementing mutual TLS where appropriate to ensure both client and server identities are verified before any sensitive data exchange occurs.
