CVE-2026-65587 in Graphics DDKinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 10/30/2026

A web page that contains unusual WebGPU content loaded into the GPU GLES render process can trigger an OOB write in the GPU user-space driver, leading to memory corruption and possible browser/GPU process crash.

The software writes data past the end of an intended memory offset. Writing outside the bounds of allocated memory can corrupt adjacent memory, crash the process, or cause undefined behaviour.

This vulnerability represents a critical out-of-bounds write condition within the GPU user-space driver associated with WebGPU content processing in Google Chrome's GLES render architecture. The flaw is triggered when a web page loads unusual or malformed WebGPU shaders and commands that are passed to the graphics hardware through the OpenGL ES (GLES) interface. During the execution of these operations, the software fails to properly validate memory offsets before writing data, allowing writes to occur past the end of an intended memory buffer. This specific failure mode aligns with CWE-787, which classifies out-of-bounds write vulnerabilities where a program writes data beyond the allocated boundaries of a buffer, potentially overwriting adjacent memory structures or control information.

The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe due to its location within the GPU process, which typically operates with elevated privileges relative to standard web content but remains isolated from the main browser UI and network stacks. An attacker who can craft a malicious webpage containing specially designed WebGPU commands could exploit this flaw to corrupt memory in the GPU driver's user-space context. This corruption can lead to immediate instability, resulting in crashes of both the GPU process and potentially the entire browser application. More critically, if an attacker can control the data written or manipulate the state of the corrupted memory regions, they may achieve arbitrary code execution within the context of the GPU process. While modern browsers employ sandboxing techniques such as site isolation to mitigate lateral movement from a compromised renderer to sensitive system components, a successful exploitation in the GPU driver could still lead to privilege escalation if additional vulnerabilities exist or if the sandbox boundaries are bypassed through other means.

From an attack vector perspective, this vulnerability is classified under MITRE ATT&CK technique T1203, which covers Exploitation for Client Execution, specifically within the context of browser-based attacks. The exploitation requires user interaction to load a malicious webpage, making it suitable for phishing campaigns or drive-by download scenarios where social engineering is used to direct victims to compromised sites hosting the exploit code. The presence of WebGPU support in modern browsers expands the attack surface significantly compared to legacy WebGL implementations, as WebGPU provides more low-level access to GPU resources and command buffers, increasing the complexity and potential impact of driver-side vulnerabilities.

Mitigation strategies for this vulnerability primarily rely on vendor patches that address the memory validation logic within the GLES render process. Users should ensure their browsers are updated to the latest stable version where these out-of-bounds write checks have been implemented or hardened. For developers integrating WebGPU, it is essential to adhere strictly to specification guidelines and perform rigorous input sanitization before passing data to GPU drivers. Security researchers and penetration testers evaluating browser security should focus on fuzzing GPU command buffers and shader inputs to identify similar boundary validation failures in other graphics processing units supported by the same driver infrastructure. Continuous monitoring of browser update releases and prompt application of patches are critical defense-in-depth measures against this class of memory corruption vulnerabilities.
