Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.10.7 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function perf_event_open of the file arch/arm/kernel/perf_event.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The validate_event function in arch/arm/kernel/perf_event.c in the Linux kernel before 3.10.8 on the ARM platform allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) by adding a hardware event to an event group led by a software event.
The weakness was published 08/07/2013 by Vince Weaver as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4254 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75364 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:0677-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195919 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-1968-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.10.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at arm.linux.org.uk. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75364), SecurityFocus (BID 61793†), OSVDB (96426†), Secunia (SA54494†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41204†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7886 and VDB-108587. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
