Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.8.1 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function _xfs_buf_find of the file fs/xfs/xfs_buf.c of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The _xfs_buf_find function in fs/xfs/xfs_buf.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.6 does not validate block numbers, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the ability to mount an XFS filesystem containing a metadata inode with an invalid extent map.
The weakness was released 01/28/2013 by Prasad J Pandit as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1819 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70190 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1968-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195919 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-1968-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82567), Tenable (70190), SecurityFocus (BID 58301†), OSVDB (90904†) and Secunia (SA53463†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-8500 and VDB-10015. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
