Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function hash_recvmsg of the file crypto/algif_hash.c of the component Crypto Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The crypto API in the Linux kernel through 3.9-rc8 does not initialize certain length variables, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted recvmsg or recvfrom system call, related to the hash_recvmsg function in crypto/algif_hash.c and the skcipher_recvmsg function in crypto/algif_skcipher.c.
The weakness was published 04/07/2013 by Mathias Krause as not defined changelog entry (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3076 since 04/15/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66590 (Ubuntu 13.04 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1837-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165947 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2013:1182-2)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (83717), Tenable (66590), SecurityFocus (BID 59377†), OSVDB (92670†) and Secunia (SA53463†). Similar entries are available at VDB-7886, VDB-8486, VDB-8499 and VDB-8597. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
