A vulnerability was found in firewalld up to 0.4.3.2 (Firewall Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file firewalld.py. firewalld.py in firewalld before 0.4.3.3 allows local users to bypass authentication and modify firewall configurations via the (1) addPassthrough, (2) removePassthrough, (3) addEntry, (4) removeEntry, or (5) setEntries D-Bus API method.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2016. The weakness was disclosed 04/19/2017 by Huzaifa Sidhpurwala (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-5410 since 06/10/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95343 (CentOS 7 : firewalld (CESA-2016:2597)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236163 (Red Hat Update for firewalld (RHSA-2016:2597)).
