Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11-rc7 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the file net/sched/act_api.c of the component Cookie. The manipulation of the argument nlattr with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The cookie feature in the packet action API implementation in net/sched/act_api.c in the Linux kernel 4.11.x through 4.11-rc7 mishandles the tb nlattr array, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory access and refcount underflow, and system hang or crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via "tc filter add" commands in certain contexts. NOTE: this does not affect stable kernels, such as 4.10.x, from kernel.org.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2017. The weakness was released 04/19/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7979 since 04/19/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100668 (Ubuntu 17.04 : linux, linux-raspi2 vulnerabilities (USN-3314-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196809 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-raspi2 Vulnerabilities (USN-3314-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100668) and SecurityFocus (BID 97969†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-100469, VDB-100470, VDB-100473 and VDB-100633. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
