Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.x/4.10.11 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the file drivers/char/virtio_console.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
drivers/char/virtio_console.c in the Linux kernel 4.9.x and 4.10.x before 4.10.12 interacts incorrectly with the CONFIG_VMAP_STACK option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash or memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging use of more than one virtual page for a DMA scatterlist.
The bug was discovered 04/16/2017. The weakness was presented 04/23/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-8067 since 04/23/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100668 (Ubuntu 17.04 : linux, linux-raspi2 vulnerabilities (USN-3314-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351446 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-012).
Upgrading to version 4.10.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100668) and SecurityFocus (BID 97997†). See VDB-96555, VDB-96560, VDB-96561 and VDB-96562 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
