A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.10 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the file drivers/net/usb/rtl8150.c. drivers/net/usb/rtl8150.c in the Linux kernel 4.9.x before 4.9.11 interacts incorrectly with the CONFIG_VMAP_STACK option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash or memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging use of more than one virtual page for a DMA scatterlist.
The bug was discovered 04/16/2017. The weakness was published 04/23/2017 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-8069 since 04/23/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351446 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-012).
Upgrading to version 4.9.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
