The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in the IP_MSFILTER and IPV6_MSFILTER features in (1) sys/netinet/in_mcast.c and (2) sys/netinet6/in6_mcast.c in the multicast implementation in the kernel in FreeBSD 8.3 through 9.2-PRERELEASE allow local users to bypass intended restrictions on kernel-memory read and write operations, and consequently gain privileges, via vectors involving a large number of source-filter entries.
The weakness was disclosed 08/22/2013 by Clément Lecigne (Rick) with Google Security Team as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at freebsd.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3077 since 04/15/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69483 (Debian DSA-2743-1 : kfreebsd-9 - privilege escalation/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 9.2-PRERELEASE eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69483), SecurityFocus (BID 61484†), OSVDB (96518†), Secunia (SA54496†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41191†). The entries VDB-9811, VDB-10058 and VDB-100035 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
