Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 8.3/9.0/9.1/9.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component SCTP Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The sctp_send_initiate_ack function in sys/netinet/sctp_output.c in the SCTP implementation in the kernel in FreeBSD 8.3 through 9.2-PRERELEASE does not properly initialize the state-cookie data structure, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory by reading packet data in INIT-ACK chunks.
The weakness was presented 08/22/2013 by Julian Seward and Michael Tuexen as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at freebsd.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-5209 since 08/15/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69483 (Debian DSA-2743-1 : kfreebsd-9 - privilege escalation/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 9.2-PRERELEASE eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.freebsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69483), SecurityFocus (BID 61939†), OSVDB (96519†), Secunia (SA54496†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41190†).
