Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.10.12 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function skb_to_sgvec of the file drivers/net/macsec.c of the component MACsec Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in drivers/net/macsec.c in the MACsec module in the Linux kernel through 4.10.12 allows attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the use of a MAX_SKB_FRAGS+1 size in conjunction with the NETIF_F_FRAGLIST feature, leading to an error in the skb_to_sgvec function.
The bug was discovered 04/25/2017. The weakness was published 04/25/2017 as Bug 1445207 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7477 since 04/05/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99987 (Fedora 24 : kernel (2017-0aa0f69e0c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
