CubeCart up to 6.1.3 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in CubeCart up to 6.1.3 (E-Commerce Management Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in CubeCart versions prior to 6.1.4 allows remote authenticated attackers to read arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 01/27/2017. The weakness was published 04/28/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at jvn.jp. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2098 since 12/01/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 91 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11819 (CubeCart Multiple Directory Traversal Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 6.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
