Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in util-linux (the affected version is unknown). This affects an unknown code of the file login-utils/su-common.c of the component Child Process Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
A race condition was found in util-linux before 2.32.1 in the way su handled the management of child processes. A local authenticated attacker could use this flaw to kill other processes with root privileges under specific conditions.
The bug was discovered 03/21/2017. The weakness was published 02/01/2017 by Tobias Stoeckmann as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-2616 since 12/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
