Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function bfd_dwarf2_find_nearest_line of the component BFD Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to an invalid read of size 8 because of missing a check to determine whether symbols are NULL in the _bfd_dwarf2_find_nearest_line function. This vulnerability causes programs that conduct an analysis of binary programs using the libbfd library, such as objdump, to crash.
The bug was discovered 05/01/2017. The weakness was shared 05/01/2017 as Bug 21409 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org.
