Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU binutils up to 2.27 (Programming Tool Software). This affects the function bfd_elf_final_link of the file bfd/elflink.c of the component BFD Library. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has an invalid read (of size 8) because the code to emit relocs (bfd_elf_final_link function in bfd/elflink.c) does not check the format of the input file before trying to read the ELF reloc section header. The vulnerability leads to a GNU linker (ld) program crash.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was presented 03/29/2017 as Bug 20908 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7299 since 03/29/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 113 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105225 (openSUSE Security Update : binutils (openSUSE-2017-1330)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171830 (OpenSUSE Security Update for binutils (openSUSE-SU-2018:3223-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.28 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (105225) and SecurityFocus (BID 97217†). See VDB-98231, VDB-98373, VDB-99064 and VDB-99065 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
