The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has an aout_link_add_symbols function in bfd/aoutx.h that has an off-by-one vulnerability because it does not carefully check the string offset. The vulnerability could lead to a GNU linker (ld) program crash.

The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was published 03/29/2017 as Bug 20924 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7301 since 03/29/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
