A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.28 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function malloc of the component BFD Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to an invalid write of size 8 because of missing a malloc() return-value check to see if memory had actually been allocated in the _bfd_generic_get_section_contents function. This vulnerability causes programs that conduct an analysis of binary programs using the libbfd library, such as objcopy, to crash.
The bug was discovered 05/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/01/2017 as Bug 21431 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-8395 since 05/01/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely.
