Details
A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the file gif2tiff.c of the component LAZ Decompressor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The LZW decompressor in the gif2tiff tool in libtiff 4.0.3 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF image.
The weakness was released 08/14/2013 by Pedro Ribeiro and Huzaifa S. Sidhpurwala as [SECURITY] [DSA 2744-1] tiff security update as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4244 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
