IBM DB2 and DB2 Connect 9.7 through FP8, 9.8 through FP5, 10.1 through FP2, and 10.5 through FP1 allow remote authenticated users to execute DML statements by leveraging EXPLAIN authority.
The weakness was disclosed 08/22/2013 as swg21646809 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4033 since 06/07/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
the user would need to have a valid security credential to connect to the database and EXPLAIN, SQLADM or DBADM authority
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69800 (IBM DB2 10.5 < Fix Pack 1 Security Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19942 (IBM DB2 Unauthorized Access to Table Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version V10.5 FP1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at www-01.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
