A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Digium Asterisk (Communications System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component SIP Request Handler. The SIP channel driver (channels/chan_sip.c) in Asterisk Open Source 1.8.x before 1.8.23.1, 10.x before 10.12.3, and 11.x before 11.5.1; Certified Asterisk 1.8.15 before 1.8.15-cert3 and 11.2 before 11.2-cert2; and Asterisk Digiumphones 10.x-digiumphones before 10.12.3-digiumphones allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference, segmentation fault, and daemon crash) via an invalid SDP that defines a media description before the connection description in a SIP request.
The weakness was released 08/27/2013 by Matthew Jordan as AST-2013-005 as not defined bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at downloads.digium.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5642 since 08/28/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69559 (Asterisk SIP Channel Driver Invalid SDP Denial of Service (AST-2013-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42418 (Asterisk Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AST-2013-004, AST-2013-005)).
Upgrading to version 1.8.23.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13417.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69559), SecurityFocus (BID 62022†), OSVDB (96690†), Secunia (SA54534†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41319†).
