Digium Asterisk up to 11.5.1 SIP Channel Termination memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Digium Asterisk. Impacted is an unknown function of the component SIP Channel Termination Handler. The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2013-5641. Moreover, an exploit is present. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Digium Asterisk (Communications System). Affected is an unknown code block of the component SIP Channel Termination Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The SIP channel driver (channels/chan_sip.c) in Asterisk Open Source 1.8.17.x through 1.8.22.x, 1.8.23.x before 1.8.23.1, and 11.x before 11.5.1 and Certified Asterisk 1.8.15 before 1.8.15-cert3 and 11.2 before 11.2-cert2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference, segmentation fault, and daemon crash) via an ACK with SDP to a previously terminated channel. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2013 by Joshua Colp as AST-2013-004 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at downloads.digium.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5641 since 08/28/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69886 (Fedora 19 : asterisk-11.5.1-2.fc19 (2013-15560)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42418 (Asterisk Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AST-2013-004, AST-2013-005)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.23.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13277.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69886), SecurityFocus (BID 62021†), OSVDB (96691†), Secunia (SA54534†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41318†). The entry VDB-10091 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
