A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library 2.25 (Software Library). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function xdr_bytes/xdr_string of the component Buffer Deserialization. The manipulation as part of a UDP Packet leads to a deserialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. The xdr_bytes and xdr_string functions in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.25 mishandle failures of buffer deserialization, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (virtual memory allocation, or memory consumption if an overcommit setting is not used) via a crafted UDP packet to port 111, a related issue to CVE-2017-8779.

The bug was discovered 05/04/2017. The weakness was shared 05/07/2017 by Marcus Meissner (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-8804 since 05/07/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107086 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : glibc (SUSE-SU-2018:0565-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170764 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for glibc (SUSE-SU-2018:0451-1)).

Proper firewalling of udp/111 (rpc) is able to address this issue. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
