GNU C Library up to 2.26 memalign integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.26. It has been classified as critical. Impacted is an unknown function of the component memalign. The manipulation leads to integer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2018-6485. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.26 (Software Library). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component memalign. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An integer overflow in the implementation of the posix_memalign in memalign functions in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.26 and earlier could cause these functions to return a pointer to a heap area that is too small, potentially leading to heap corruption.

The bug was discovered 02/01/2018. The weakness was presented 02/01/2018 by Jakub Wilk (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-6485 since 02/01/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 107086 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : glibc (SUSE-SU-2018:0565-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237016 (Red Hat Update for glibc (RHSA-2018:3092)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (107086) and SecurityFocus (BID 102912†). See VDB-100924, VDB-110769, VDB-112777 and VDB-117986 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
