Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.27 on 32-bit (Software Library) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function realpath in the library stdlib/canonicalize.c. The manipulation as part of a Long Path leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
stdlib/canonicalize.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.27 and earlier, when processing very long pathname arguments to the realpath function, could encounter an integer overflow on 32-bit architectures, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow and, potentially, arbitrary code execution.
The bug was discovered 02/04/2018. The weakness was released 05/18/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-11236 since 05/18/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 103 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110393 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : glibc (SUSE-SU-2018:1562-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237016 (Red Hat Update for glibc (RHSA-2018:3092)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (110393) and SecurityFocus (BID 104255†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-110769, VDB-112733, VDB-117980 and VDB-117987. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
