Linux Kernel steelseries HID Driver hid-steelseries.c CONFIG_HID_STEELSERIES memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file drivers/hid/hid-steelseries.c of the component steelseries HID Driver. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID_STEELSERIES with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

drivers/hid/hid-steelseries.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_STEELSERIES is enabled, allows physically proximate attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based out-of-bounds write) via a crafted device.

The weakness was released 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-2891 since 04/11/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80152 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:1677-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167334 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:1669-1)).

Applying the patch PATCH 05/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (80152), SecurityFocus (BID 62047†), OSVDB (96776†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41289†).
