Google Android Linux Kernel core_info_read/inst_info_read dbg_buf Kernel Memory memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Android. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this issue is the function core_info_read/inst_info_read of the component Linux Kernel. Executing a manipulation of the argument dbg_buf can lead to memory corruption (Kernel Memory). This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2017-8244. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function core_info_read/inst_info_read of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation of the argument dbg_buf with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In core_info_read and inst_info_read in all Android releases from CAF using the Linux kernel, variable "dbg_buf", "dbg_buf->curr" and "dbg_buf->filled_size" could be modified by different threads at the same time, but they are not protected with mutex or locks. Buffer overflow is possible on race conditions. "buffer->curr" itself could also be overwritten, which means that it may point to anywhere of kernel memory (for write).

The bug was discovered 05/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at codeaurora.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-8244 since 04/25/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/23/2020). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 98547†). The entries VDB-102646, VDB-110201, VDB-110202 and VDB-110203 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
