Linux Kernel up to 4.6.1 fs/ext4/inode.c System Calls information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation as part of System Calls leads to information disclosure. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7495. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.6.1 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file fs/ext4/inode.c. The manipulation as part of a System Calls leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

fs/ext4/inode.c in the Linux kernel before 4.6.2, when ext4 data=ordered mode is used, mishandles a needs-flushing-before-commit list, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from other users' files in opportunistic circumstances by waiting for a hardware reset, creating a new file, making write system calls, and reading this file.

The bug was discovered 05/15/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7495 since 04/05/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101852 (EulerOS 2.0 SP1 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2017-1122)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196895 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3406-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.6.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101852) and SecurityFocus (BID 98491†). The entry VDB-101233 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
