Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple iOS up to 10.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was shared 05/15/2017 by Ian Beer (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero as HT207798 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-2501 since 12/01/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A race condition was addressed through improved locking.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 10.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42054), Tenable (100270) and SecurityFocus (BID 98468†). The entries VDB-101294, VDB-101254, VDB-101255 and VDB-101256 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
