A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iOS up to 10.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component TextInput. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was released 05/15/2017 by Ian Beer (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero as HT207798 as confirmed advisory (Website). A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100271 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2017-002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 10.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
