A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apple iOS up to 10.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component WebKit. The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-2508 since 12/01/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. A logic issue existed in the handling of WebKit container nodes. This issue was addressed with improved state management.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100675 (GLSA-201706-15 : WebKitGTK+: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371242 (Apple Safari 10.1.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-05-15-7)).
Upgrading to version 10.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
