A vulnerability was found in Liquidthreads Project MediaWiki up to 1.21.1 (Content Management System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file pages/TalkpageHistoryView.php of the component LiquidThreads Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in pages/TalkpageHistoryView.php in the LiquidThreads (LQT) extension 2.x and possibly 3.x for MediaWiki 1.19.x before 1.19.8, 1.20.x before 1.20.7, and 1.21.x before 1.21.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a thread subject.
The weakness was disclosed 09/03/2013 by Alex as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4308 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:pages/TalkpageHistoryView.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70677 (GLSA-201310-21 : MediaWiki: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12778 (MediaWiki Multiple Path Disclosure, Cross-Site Request Forgery and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.21.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
