Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file geshi/contrib/example.php of the component SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi Extension. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in contrib/example.php in the SyntaxHighlight GeSHi extension for MediaWiki, possibly as downloaded before September 2013, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the PATH_INFO.
The weakness was published 09/03/2013 by Mateusz Goik as Bug 49070 as not defined bug report (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4305 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:geshi/contrib/example.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70677 (GLSA-201310-21 : MediaWiki: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12778 (MediaWiki Multiple Path Disclosure, Cross-Site Request Forgery and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.21.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mediawiki.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
