A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple watchOS up to 3.2.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was shared 05/15/2017 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero as HT207800 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-2513 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. A use after free issue was addressed through improved memory management.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
