Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple watchOS up to 3.2.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was published 05/15/2017 by Patrick Wardle (OSS-Fuzz) with Google Project Zero as HT207800 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-2518 since 12/01/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
A buffer overflow issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176711 (Debian Security Update for sqlite3 (DLA 1633-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
