Apple macOS up to 10.12.4 DiskArbitration race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.4 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component DiskArbitration. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. macOS before 10.12.5 is affected. The issue involves the "DiskArbitration" component. A race condition allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context via a crafted app.

The bug was discovered 05/10/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/15/2017 with Zero Day Initiative as HT207797 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2533 since 12/01/2016. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A race condition was addressed with additional filesystem restrictions.

A public exploit has been developed by phoenhex in Bash and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100270 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370396 (Apple macOS Sierra Security Update 10.12.5, El Capitan 2017-002 and Yosemite 2017-002 Not Installed (2017-002)).

Upgrading to version 10.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42146), Tenable (100270) and SecurityFocus (BID 98468†). The entries VDB-101255, VDB-101256, VDB-101257 and VDB-101258 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
